Deconstruction Ahead

It started with a feeling I didn’t recognize. It happened ‘bout the time I looked into her eyes Sort of like a jackpot or winning some big prize. A little bit like lightning from above I guess you’d say it’s something like love. I knew it was the real thing. I never saw it coming. I hardly recognize the man that I’m becoming. Living life without her would be positively numbing. I guess… when push comes to shove You’d have to say it’s something like love. Bridge: Love makes you buy flowers for the first time in your life. Get tickets to a ballgame and gladly take your wife. A thousand little changes… difficult to see I think of what love changes. I’m happy that it’s me. This feeling is like glue… It holds us both together Even if there’s trouble, it makes us both feel better. Every day’s a gamble… I can’t believe I met her. This life fits me like a glove. It seems to me that’s something like love. The thing about love… it keeps you on the level Everything is neater and used to be disheveled Keeps you from doing something you know you shouldn’t do. It fills the world with sunshine… and I’m the living proof. I’m not here to tell you that it goes without a hitch There’s that seven-year and fourteen year and twenty-one year itch. But I know me and the old one, and I know which one is which. I guess… when push comes to shove You’d have to say it’s something like love.

This Song 04:00
Sometimes I think… maybe too much Nostalgia’s… like a crutch You can’t make good… what’s gone bad You can’t get back… all the things you had. Sometimes… it’s just because It can’t be… like it was Chorus But there’s love. And there’s hope. Going where / you don’t want to go. Like walking / through the flames When things will / never be the same. Glass half full / No glass at all Feeling broken, but standing tall When I miss you … I could sit and pout But that’s not … what this song’s about. Sometimes songs … are like clichés The only way to say … what you want to say You fix… the things you can And you take it… like a man. That doesn’t mean the story’s done There’s still a lot of race to run Chorus Think about love. Think about hope. Not getting hung with your own rope. It’s grabbing life / with both your hands Not waiting ‘till she makes amends. It’s glass half full, then it’s not there I’ll find another, so I don’t care. Even when I’m lonely … I won’t sit and pout ‘Cause that’s not … what this song’s about. It’s about love. It’s about hope. Not being scared to look like a dope. You follow all of your desires Without a net / up on the wire. Glass half full / No glass at all I may be battered, but I’m standing tall I don’t have to miss you … I can stand and shout ‘Cause that’s … what this song’s about.

I should have seen it coming. Now, I wish I did. You knew what you were planning. So you ran away and hid. Some thanks I get for loving… But that’s just what I do We’re barely getting started And you’re off with someone new. I can bear whatever’s coming So go take your best shot. How much blues you got? Like nothing really matters Your word is not your vow I’ve heard these things can happen I guess I just don’t know how. This hasn’t been a picnic But I’m stronger than you thought. I’ll start another chapter. With the lesson I’ve been taught. I can stand the trauma Take another shot. How much blues you got? I assumed that she were truthful. That was just a lie. Now I know the answer: Trust, but verify. Don’t ever be a sucker Believe in what you see. So you don’t have to face What happened here to me. I’ve really learned my lesson ‘Cause that is all I’ve got. How much blues you got?

The Hat 03:21
First time down in Texas, the sun was raging hot. I thought I’d grab a cold one, ‘cause that would hit the spot. Drove right to a tavern and slammed the car in park. Strode in through the front door where it was cool and dark. And as my eyes adjusted, I saw this soon enough: Lovely ladies everywhere and men just looking rough. There’s a skinny little fella with a girl on either arm. Another guy explained it. “His hat works like a charm.” In Texas, it’s all about the hat From the Gulf to Amarillo, no matter where you’re at. From El Paso to Abilene, and every town that’s in between. Most amazing thing you’ve ever seen. A stylish hat will catch the ladies’ eye Rain or snow, your hat will keep you dry. In straw or felt, in white or black, the need is just a natural fact. In Texas, it’s all about the hat. Everywhere you travel, there’s something that’s unique. What people always brag about to everyone they meet. New York has the Yankees. Memphis has great ‘que. Grand has got the Canyon. Nashville’s got the tunes. The Lone Star State is different. It’s not like all the rest. No matter what they show you, they’ll claim that it’s the best. But one thing’s really special, and stands above the crowd The thing that sits upon their head of which they’re duly proud. In Texas, it’s all about the hat . From Houston out to Wako, no matter where you’re at. In Dallas every head I’ve seen, wearing suits or wearing jeans. The sharpest thing you’ve ever seen. A classy hat will catch the ladies’ eye No need to even ask the reason why. Round on top or short and flat, you’ll never want to give it back. In Texas, it’s all about the hat. In Texas, it’s all about the hat.

I work long hours, that’s enough. I don’t have to tell you times are tough. There are lots of things I wish I had, but All things considered, life’s not bad. I buy my groceries, I pay my rent. Before I start, the rest is spent. But it’s not enough to make me sad. In case you hadn’t noticed, life’s not bad. I don’t need much, it’s plain to see. A little fishing, maybe watch some TV. I’ve got my baby by my side I’m never lonely for the ride. When the weekend comes around We go dancing, paint up the town. The best time I won’t remember that I had But I’m sure that I’ll recall – life’s not bad. I’m not saying everything’s a cinch You walk a mile sometimes just to gain an inch But I do all the things I’d ever want to do I wouldn’t say so if it weren’t true. So that’s my plan, if you’d call it that. And I’m thankful for all the things we’ve got. I never find a reason to be sad As long as I remember – life’s not bad.

about

I think of this disc as a kind of sampler platter with a taste of a wide range of musical styles and approaches. Tough to pigeonhole, I suppose, but it's all stuff I like. Call it Eclectic Neo-Americana.
